Fix observes: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s most interesting about econospeak is not what it includes, but what it excludes<\/em>. Economics textbooks underuse a large portion of the English language. Let\u2019s have a look at this underuse.<\/p>

We\u2019ll start with the \u2018under-represented\u2019 quadrant. These are words that are used frequently in economics textbooks, but still less than in average English. Figure 9 shows the most under-represented words. Here, a larger font indicates more underuse.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

After compiling a couple of E.E. Cummings<\/a>-esque sentences from the core “non-economist” language, Fix observes: “Economists pay attention to competition between groups, but not to the bureaucratic dynamics\u00a0within<\/em>\u00a0groups.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
